The Origins The word 'Photography' is derived from the Greek word 'photo' meaning 'light' and 'graphia' meaning 'drawing' or 'writing'. The earliest known cameras were created in the early 1800's and in 1839 the first camera was commercially introduced, this was the birth of practical photography.
Is all photography art? It can be hard to justify an instant medium as 'art', especially in a digital age, where anyone can pick up a camera and capture a scenario. This is why many photographers will only shoot in film as they feel this is photography in it's true form. Digital photographs can be a truthful documentation of a moment in time but they can also be a piece of art, this all depends on how the photographer wants their image to be viewed, and the format it is seen in.
Reading Photography Anyone can pick up a camera or phone and capture what they are seeing. However there can be a difference between being an artist and simply a photographer. It is important to be able to read and understand photos, there is nearly always more to an image than meets the eye, photos need to be analysed and read just in the same way a piece of writing does. Photographs always tell a story.
My A Level website will show my journey in photography and how I have evolved as an artist over the course of 2 years.
